Retirement Centers

Since 1990 Sternberg has been performing in retirement centers all over Florida as well as in Georgia and Alabama.  He plays in assisted living faciltities in the three levels:  independent living, semi-independent living and memory care.  Steve also plays in rehabilitation and nursing centers.  The seniors relive the good and poignant memories with the tunes Sternberg plays from the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's.  Steve involves the audience with name-the-tune, singing-along and gets the listeners clapping, tapping and moving to the beat.  Sternberg sings many of the songs, as well as playing harmonica while playing the piano! (Hmmm, how does he do that?)

His program is upbeat, energizing, interactive and fun.  Steve introduces many songs with historical information and he'll often joke with the audience.  His program is expecially unique for two reasons.  One, Steve spices up the musical selection with ragtime music from 1898 through 1914.  Second, he plays exuberant, rollicking boogie-woogie music from the 30's and 40's throughout his hour-long program.  He is quite the entertainer.  His Jerry Lee Lewis imitation will knock your shoes off! (You'll understand that comment when you see his show.)

After his program many residents, patients and their family members at these facilities  have told Sternberg that he is the best entertainer that comes there.  Here are a couple of quotes related by Sternberg from such residents :

Lucy said, "I won't need any medicine today.  You just make us feel so good all over!"  Later she added "You must have a doctor's degree, 'cause you make us feel so good!"  A woman at another facility puts her walker aside and dances to my boogie-woogie tunes.  She told me "I don't need any medicine.  Your music is my medicine."  A man said "You wake up all these old folks!"  Recently after my program where I played for the first time, a woman excitedly told me "In my 84 years on this earth I have never heard piano playing as good as this!"  A resident of The Veranda in Pensacola, an assisted living facility, wrote this letter to me after hearing one of my performances:

"Thank you for bringing back memories of my father's piano playing.  I really liked the "Maple Leaf Rag;"  it brought tears flowing.  As I told you Dad played in the Minstrels;  he also played the mouth organ (harmonica).  My daughter in Califormia has the piano now with the music cabinet with old sheet music in it.  It is an upright piano of a beautiful walnut grain.  Thanks again;  see you next time."
